Background

In recent years, legislation and other measures to recognize diversity and related research have been rapidly implemented in Japan and abroad, but issues such as a shortage of highly specialized personnel in special needs education, school teachers with disabilities and other diverse backgrounds, female researchers in science and agriculture and delays in digitalization in the education sector remain a serious problem throughout the country.

Objective

Against the background described above, The Institute for D&I , established in April 2023, aims to build a human resource development system with an inclusive mindset as a world-leading D&I education and research center.
By promoting education and research on how to create a society and environment in which diverse people can live comfortably, the D&I Promotion Organization aims to foster wellbeing for individuals and society by focusing on improving the health and well-being of diverse people and examining ways to provide them with better learning and working environments.

The ‘six’ goals that the D&I Institute aims to achieve

Of the 17 goals of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), which Hiroshima University aims to contribute to on a university-wide basis, the D&I Promotion Organization will develop activities to contribute to the achievement of six goals in particular.

The Institute for Diversity and Inclusion, Hiroshima University is committed to supporting the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)

Development of activities

The Institute for D&I will strengthen the activities that have been promoted by the three centers.
For example,

  • We provide a university-wide D&I education and practice environment for students who do not aim to obtain a teacher’s diploma.
  • We will strengthen the development of D&I promotion activities, for example, by taking initiatives to improve accessibility across the continuum of primary, secondary, higher education and society through digitization and assistive devices.
  • We will strengthen accessibility and inclusive support for students with diverse needs, such as women, LGBTQ people, people with foreign roots and disabilities.
  • In the future, the three centers will develop the four projects shown in the diagram, utilizing their respective characteristics and in collaboration with each other.
